PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Seven check dams were built in central Logar province during the past one year and work on another seven check dams was ongoing, an official said on Sunday.

Speaking on behalf of Logar River Basin Authority, Fazl Rahman Omarzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News the construction of the seven water check dams consumed 22.5 million afghanis and had the capacity to store 60,000 cubic meters water.

He said the dams after their completion were put into service in Pul-i-Alam, Mohammad Agha, Baraki Barak, Charkh, Khoshi, Azra and Kharwar districts last year.

He said the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) will build seven more check dams in Pul-i-Alam city and six districts and a survey in this regard was in progress.

“These check dams will increase the underground water level, prevent floods and also irrigate agricultural lands,” Omarzai added.

On the other hand, Rasool Gul, a farmer, said he was happy with the implementation of these projects. He said now the ground water level would surge and water would be available for irrigation.

Fazlullah, a Mohammad Agha resident, told Pajhwok MoEW had started constructing check dams in Sorkhab, Kharwar and Abtak districts.

According to Fazlullah, these dams besides producing electricity will provide water for agriculture.

The government has started constructing check dams in many areas of the country.
