PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department of Baghlan has recorded a 14 percent surge in onion yield in the northern province this year.
Abdullah Niazi, an official of the department, told Pajhwok Afghan News the price of the onion had also spiked two percent.
He recalled last year onion had been cultivated on 3,329 hectares of land that had produced 127,974 metric tonnes of onion.
He said this year the crop had been cultivated on 3,470 hectares of land, which produced 145,740 metric tonnes of onion, showing a 14 percent increase.
He added: “The agriculture department had given necessary instructions to farmers about onion cultivation this year, which led to the surge in yield.”
On the other hand, farmers are also happy over the rise in this year’s onion harvest.
Haji Ghulam Raza, a grower from Dehnaghori district, voiced satisfaction with his onion yield.
He said: “Last year, I had harvested 105 tonnes of onion from 15 acres of land, but this year the yield has doubled.”
Last year, he sold per seven kilograms of onion for 60 to 70 afghanis, but this year the price went up to 125 afghanis.
