PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Afghanistan presents an invaluable opportunity for trade and transit, benefiting all regional countries, Pakistan’s prime minister said on Wednesday.
Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad, Shahbaz Sharif underlined the imperative of stability in the neighbouring country.
“A stable Afghanistan is not only desirable but essential to fully realising great (trade and connectivity) opportunities,” he told the meeting’s participants.
Sharif asked the international community to extend urgent humanitarian support to the long-suffering people of Afghanistan.
The SCO is comprised of China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus.
“Flagship projects like the Belt and Road Initiative of President Xi Jinping; the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and the north-south transport corridor be expanded,” he suggested.
He called for joint efforts to alleviate poverty, empower women and youth and promote prosperity through unity across the SCO region.
