PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Water from the Sorkhab dam in central Logar province has been released for irrigation of agricultural land for the first time after years of delay.
Head of the Logar river sub-basin Mullah Mohammad Ismail Akhundzada told reporters the dam had been filled to capacity, holding around nine million cubic metres of water.
He said the dam would help irrigate about 10,000 acres of farmland and partially address water shortages faced by local residents.
A resident of the Sorkhab area, Haji Bismillah, said people, particularly farmers, had faced serious challenges in recent years due to drought, including disputes over water.
He said the filling of the dam would largely resolve water shortages and expand agricultural activities.
Another resident, Kamran, said the Sorkhab dam area was also suitable for tourism and recreation, with visitors from different provinces travelling there each year to enjoy its natural beauty and climate.
He called on the relevant departments to provide necessary facilities for tourists and arrange boats for recreational purposes.
