KABUL (Pajhwok): The death toll from devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 903, while 4,247 people, including 592 foreign nationals, remain missing, the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said on Monday.
Rescue teams continued efforts to reach affected communities days after massive flooding, triggered by a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, struck the region on Wednesday.
IANS, citing the latest figures from Nepal’s disaster management authority, reported that 903 bodies had been recovered.
The authority said 933 employees of hydropower projects along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers were also unaccounted for.
Rescue teams, working with Indian and Chinese specialists, were attempting to reach people believed to be trapped inside tunnels at several hydropower projects, the report said.
At least 267 people were injured in the floods, with 156 later discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment.
The authority said 10,451 people, including 252 foreign nationals, had been rescued so far. Another 3,344 people were rescued through air operations conducted by the Nepal Army.
A total of 20,819 security personnel from the army, police and armed police forces have been deployed for search, rescue and relief operations, the authority said.
