KABUL (Pajhwok): At least four people have been killed, more than 2,000 evacuated from their homes and hundreds rescued by emergency services amid torrential rain and flooding in eastern Spain.
Al Jazeera reported that downpours brought by Storm Adam, which began on Saturday, dumped as much as 700 litres of rain per square metre (185 gallons) in 24 hours in some areas of the Valencia region.
Local authorities confirmed that four people had died in the floods. Two were killed in the coastal town of Oliva, one on the coast of Sagunto and another after falling into a swollen river in Catalonia, officials said.
Security and emergency services carried out more than 400 rescue operations in the Valencia region. Helicopters airlifted several residents who had become trapped on the roofs of their homes to safety, according to officials.
The report added that around 800,000 residents were ordered to remain indoors on Monday morning. However, as weather conditions improved, the restrictions were eased by the afternoon, affecting 87,000 people across eight towns and areas.
More than 2,000 people, mostly in Oliva, were also evacuated from their homes.
Meanwhile, residents of the affected areas reported extensive damage to homes, vehicles and infrastructure.
The flooding comes two years after devastating floods in the Valencia region killed more than 230 people.
Spain’s national meteorological agency has also reported that September this year was the hottest September on record in mainland Spain.
