ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Local officials on Sunday said a coordinated Taliban attack on the Khashrod district of southwestern Nimroz province had drawn a befitting response from the security forces.

Mohammad Hashim Noorzai, the district’s administrative chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News a large number of militants launched an assault on the district from several directions on Saturday night.

But the assailants were forced to retreat, according to the official, who said nothing about casualties..

The deputy police chief, Col. Mohammad Saleh Massoud, confirmed the Taliban attack on Khashrod district saying the ensuing clash lasted several hours. The rebels were forced to retreat he added.

“Four militants were killed and a number of others wounded as two Humvee vehicles and a machinegun were seized by the security forces,” he said, adding the security forces suffered no casualties.

Khashrod is a strategic district, with the Zaranj-Delaram highway passing through it. The Taliban want to capture it to facilitate their movement between Farah, Herat and Helmand.
