KABUL Breshna Shirkat (DABS), the power utility, on Sunday signed contracts with three companies for extending electricity to four districts in western Heart province.
The $16 million power supply project is being implemented in Obe, Karukh, Chishti Sharif and Pashtun Zarghon districts of Herat, DABS spokesman Wahidullah Tawhidi told reporters in Kabul.
He said the World Bank-funded project would take 18 months to complete and would benefit some 16,000 families in the four districts.
“Contracts for the three projects were signed with two Iranian firms — Atlas Afroz and Ofaq Albarz and one Afghan-Indian firm,” said Tawhidi.
Wolesi Jirga member from Herat province, Khalilullah Shaheedzada, said the people of Herat would extend their support to maintaining security for the projects.
He said after completion of the electricity projects, cold storages for fresh fruits and vegetables would be established in the province.
