Taliban claims capturing Zari district in Balkh

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Heavy fighting underway between security forces and the Taliban in the Zari district of northern Balkh province since Monday night, officials acknowledged on Tuesday.

The Taliban claimed overrunning the district but government refuted the Taliban’s claims.

Afzal Hadid, the Provincial Council (PC) head, heavy fighting between security forces and the Taliban was underway since last night in Zari district.

He said both sides used light and heavy weapons and there was possibility that common people might have suffered casualties.

According to Hadid they did not received latest report about situation in the area.

Taliban Spokesman Zabihullay Mujahid in a statement claimed the capture of district centre and police headquarters.

Mujahid claimed inflicting casualties on security forces and capturing arms in the firelight.

District Police Chief Mohammad Zaman Qabqach said he is in Kabul and was unable to establish contact with official in the district.
