JALALABAD (PAN): Unknown militants burned a girls’ school in the Chaparhar district of Nangarhar province at 2:00 am Saturday morning, an official said Saturday.
Some 100 girls were enrolled in the school. It was the third girls’ school in the district to have been targeted by unknown arsonists in the past two months.
The attackers set fire to a school building in the Ghazo village after beating up two guards, said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the Nangarhar provincial governor.
He added that four classrooms had been burned as well as desks and chairs. Mohammad Asif Shinwari, a spokesman for the Nangarhar Department of Education, said that schoolbooks had also burned.
The full extent of the losses is still under investigation, he said.
He added that local security officials and residents had put out the fire by 4:00 am Saturday morning.
No one has yet taken responsibility for this incident or the prior two attacks.
