MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): The newly appointed commander for the 303rd Pamir Police Zone in the northern provinces said on Wednesday that he would take steps to reconcile Afghans opposed to the government.
Gen. Baba Jan officially began his duty during a ceremony in Mazar-i-Sharif , the capital of the northern province of Balkh. He succeeds Gen. Daud Daud.
Gen. Daud Daud, the previous police chief for the northern zone, was killed in an explosion on May 28, 2011 along with provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Shah Jehan Noori, two other policemen, and two German soldiers. The explosion took place in the governor’s office during a high-level meeting in Takhar province.
Baba Jan told the gathering on Wednesday that some militants in the region disrupted the security.
He said he would try to reconcile the Afghans who were unintentionally involved in terrorism. He called on influential figures and religious scholars to start a widespread campaign to prevent war in the region.
He will work in coordination with provincial officials to secure the nine northern provinces in his jurisdiction, he said.
Baba Jan was a general under President Najeebullah and joined the Afghan Northern Alliance led by Ahmad Shah Massoud after the Mujahidin’s victory against the Soviets.
He worked as a provincial police chief in Kabul government.
