KABUL): The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Sunday confirmed the man who shot dead four French soldiers in central Kapisa province was an Afghan National Army (ANA) servicemember.

On Saturday, the ministry announced the assailant had been arrested. Its spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the attacker was an ANA soldier, saying they had launched an investigation into the case.
Hours after the incident, French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the suspension of training and joint operations in Afghanistan. He told diplomats in Paris: “The French Army is standing next to its allies, but we cannot accept that even one of our soldiers be killed or wounded by our allies.”
President Karzai offered deep condolences to his French counterpart and families of the victims. He praised the sacrifices of the French soldiers deployed to Afghanistan.
