Girls’ school inaugurated in Jawzjan

SHIBERGHAN (PAN):  A school building, benefiting 500 girl students, was inaugurated in the northern province of Jawzjan on Friday, officials said.

The building, having six classrooms, an administrative room, rest rooms and other facilities, was constructed on one acre of land at a cost of about $120,000.

Deputy Director of Education Abdul Rauf Aryan told Pajhwok Afghan News the project was funded by the Swedish government through the United Nations’ Children Fund (UNICEF) in the Hasanabad area of Shiberghan.

Abdul Rauf Aryan told Pajhwok Afghan News the students — previously studying under tents and trees — would benefit from the building.

“For the first time, we will be studying in an enabling environment,” said Halima, a sixth grade student. Her schoolmates often fell unconscious in summers, said another student of eighth grade, Shagufta.

According to education officials, more than 160 of the 350 schools in the province have no buildings.
