KABUL): Intelligence operatives detained four people on charges of abduction, transporting explosives and having links to insurgency in southern Helmand province, the spy service in Kabul said on Sunday.
A National Directorate of Security (NDS) statement said the detainees included three kidnappers, identified as Mirwais, Juma Gul and Sardar Mohammad, all residents of Lashkargah city, the provincial capital.
It accused the individuals of previously kidnapping a six-year-old child, who had been released after 1.5 million afghanis were paid in ransom.
Another detainee, identified as Hamdullah, a Lashkargah resident, was involved in insurgency-related activities, said the statement, which added the individual had confessed to his crime during preliminary investigations.
The statement said intelligence operatives seized 9 tonnes of explosives, ammonium nitrate and potassium chloride in Lashkargah.
The materials had been brought to the city for terrorist activities by Mullah commander for Lashkargah and Nahr-i-Saraj district for their spring offensive called “Al-Farooq operation.”
