JALALABAD (PAN): A suicide bomber on foot blew himself up before reaching his target —- foreign troops — who were busy defusing a roadside bomb in eastern Nangarhar province, where a tribal elder was gunned down on Friday, officials said.

The attacker detonated his explosives after the foreign troops signaled him to stop in the Ghanikhel district in the afternoon, the town’s administrative head told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Khan Mohammad Zwak said only the attacker was killed in the incident. But rebel spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that 14 foreign and a dozen Afghan troops were killed in the bombing carried out by a fighter named Ijaz Ahmad.

Meanwhile, a tribal elder was shot dead by the insurgents in the Kalala area of Hesrak district, the town’s development council head, Mohammad Naeem, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He said the victim, Malak Noor Rahman Maroof, was an influential tribal elder and treasurer at the council.

Maroof was killed in the attack and his son injured, he said, adding the two had also returned fire at the attackers, but there were no reports if the attackers had suffered any casualties. Naeem claimed security forces did not reach the site in time to rescue the elder and his son.
