KABUL, a Ministry of Interior official said on Saturday.
The ministry spokesman told a news conference mostly civilians fell prey to suicide attacks and roadside bombings by the militants.
Siddique Siddiqui said most of the militant-linked violence took place in Kabul, Helmand, Nangarhar, Kunar and Logar provinces this month.
Police performance during the period had been remarkable, he said, adding: “Civilians being a soft target are bearing the brunt of attacks from rebels, who want to make their presence felt and draw media attention.”
Siddiqui said 119 fighters were killed, 38 injured and 174 others detained over the past one month during 22 police operations in different parts of the country.
A dozen weapons and 777 kilograms of explosives were seized and 101 criminal cases registered, he said. Sixteen suspects were detained in connection with drug smuggling.
He said 20 policemen were killed and 64 others injured during operations over the past week. Special security arrangements have been put in place ahead of Eidul Fitr.
Special operations, including searches, patrols and enhanced duty timings, are on to ensure security during the Muslim festival. He asked people to dial 119 and 100 to inform police of suspicious activity.
