Herat police chief Maj.Gen.Abdul Hameem Hamedi told Pajhwok Afghan News that eight men were detained on charges of kidnapping and supporting Taliban militants, and they had been on the police radar for some time.
Police also seized a Kalashnikov and a pistol from the suspects.
A local resident said those arrested were militants but some months ago they had given up militancy and joined the government-led peace process.
In another incident in Baghlan province, the provincial police chief Col.Ghulam Sadiq Rostaqi told Pajhwok a fighter was killed and two of his accomplices wounded during a combined operation conducted by the International Security Assistance Force and Afghan security personnel in Kandahari area.
Baghlan Civil Hospital Director Dr Khalilullah Magowai confirmed receiving a dead body.
