Kunduz transport dept’s revenue doubles

KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): The transport management department of northern Kunduz says its revenue has doubled in 2012, compared with the previous year’s income.

Since March 21, 2012, the department earned more than 16 million ($306,630) afghanis in revenue — up from last year’s income of 8 million afghanis.

Director of Transport Syed Jawad Jalali told Pajhwok Afghan News the revenue came from toll tax, fines on violator of traffic rules, route permits and levy on fuels imports through the Sher Khan dry port.

But trucker Nooruddin complained employees of the department charged toll tax at a higher rate than approved by the government.

A taxi driver, Farid Ahmad, also accused the department of realising 50afs from him instead of the 20afs fixed by the government.

But Jalali said they had set up a monitoring committee to curb bribery in the name of toll tax. The body would pay due attention to drivers’ problems, he promised.

None of transport employees had the right to collect a tax of more than 3.6afs on one tonne of goods or more than 3 percent of route fare from a taxi driver, he concluded.
