The visitors outclassed the hosts 7-4 in Tuesday’s game, National Olympic Committee spokesman Mujibur Rahman told Pajhwok Afghan News. Sixteen nations are contesting the event.
In the first half, Afghanistan and Qatar scored one goal each, but the national squad rallied brilliantly to go 2-1 up after the breather. The rivals made spirited attempts in the first half, testing each other’s nerves.
But four minutes later, Qatar scored the equaliser off a free-kick, but they paid the penalty for a series of mistakes that enabled Afghanistan to net another five more goals, the spokesman said.
In other matches, the UAE mauled Saudi Arabia 6-3 and Palestine pipped Uzbekistan 6-5. Iran also began their campaign on a successful note, inflicting a 20-0 defeat on the Philippines, with Lebanon beating Bahrain 5-3.
