MAIMANA (PAN): One policeman, two militants and a contractor with the Afghan National Army (ANA) were killed in separate incidents in northern Faryab province, officials said on Saturday.
The policeman was killed in a clash in Qaram Qul district, provincial police chief, Maj. Gen. Nabi Jan Mullahkhel, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He said two insurgents were also killed in the encounter.
But a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed two security personnel had been killed in the gunbattle. He said only one fighter was wounded.
A spokesman for the 209th Shaheen Military Corps, Maj. Mohammad Reza, said ANA contractor had been kidnapped by the Taliban in Ghormach district two and half months ago.
The body of Ahmad Salem, the contractor, was found in Chahl Gazi area of Qaisar district late on Friday, Reza added.
A cousin of the victim, meanwhile, said the captors had sought the release of two militants from Maimana jail in return for the contractor. But the authorities’ rejection of the Taliban’s demand led to the killing of Salem. He claimed.
