Women were subjected to violence during the period that saw 31 women escaping homes, six divorced and 17 denied inheritance rights, Ruqia Achakzai told reporters at the Governor’s House in Kandahar City, the provincial capital.
She linked violent acts and crimes against the gender to widespread illiteracy, extreme poverty and cultural restrictions.
Achakzai asked the central government to establish a shelter house for women in Kandahar keeping in view growing violence against the folk.
The official vowed to share her department’s concerns with the women’s affairs ministry in Kabul over the women’s situation in Kandahar.
Achakzai said her department planned to construct a recreation park, a business marketplace, a community hall and a bakery shop for women in Kandahar.
She said the ministry had promised funding the constructions in Aino Meena locality, hoping the proposed market would help women find buyers for their handicrafts.
