JALALABAD (PAN): Hundreds of protestors in eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday blocked all entrances to the capital city of Jalalabad to protest what they alleged Governor Gul Agha Sherzai had grabbed government lands and pocketed development funds.
Abdul Zahir Qadir, a member of the Wolesi Jirga-Jalalabad highway at Dusaraka area and another road connecting Jalalabad to southern districts at Hada Farm area.
“The demonstration will continue until Governor Gul Agha Sherzai explains his activities to the people of Nangahar,” Qadir told Pajhwok Afghan News at the rally.
He accused Sherzai of grabbing government lands in different areas and pocketing money in the guise of reconstruction projects.
Sherzai spokesman Ahamd Zia Abdulzai said the governor’s house would comment on the rally later in the day.
Police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal said tight security measures were put in place to prevent the demonstration from turning violent.
A Behsud resident, Jamal Ahmad, who was traveling with his family to Kabul, said they had been stranded in traffic due to road blockades since morning.
He asked protesters to stage their demonstrations in open areas in order not to create problems for others.
