Police Consultative Council established

KABUL): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Tuesday announced the establishment of a Police Consultative Council (PCC), saying the 10-year scheme would help improve police credibility.  

Made up of civil society members, media and human rights representatives, the council held its maiden session in Kabul, with meeting participants emphasising on improved liaison between police and people.

Interior Minister Ghulam Mujtaba Patang, who chaired the meeting, insisted on the importance of the council, said it was aimed at developing strong relationship between police and the communities they served.  

 “We believe civil society groups can help the government make the police further impartial and professional force to enable it to defend democratic values and at the same time build up its image among the people,” he said.

The purpose behind the council was to narrow the gap between the force and the people and to play the role of a bridge between the two sides, the minister said. 

He hoped the PCC would help encourage females to join police ranks and highlight the role and responsibilities of police in society.
