HEART CITY/KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Nearly a dozen insurgents were killed during security operations in western Herat and southern Kandahar provinces, officials said on Thursday.
Seven militants were killed during an Afghan military operation in the Shindand district of Herat, the 203rd Zafar Military Corps spokesman Col. Nastwah Nasiri told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the operation had been successful in purging Kalaganj, Amarat and Gosha villages of rebels. He said the troops and civilians suffered no casualties.
But a resident, Tor Mohammad Zarifi, also member of the provincial council, accused the Afghan forces of torturing civilians during their operation, an accusation dismissed by Nasiri.
In Kandahar, four Taliban insurgents were killed during a search operation in the Panjwai district, the governor’s spokesman said.
A fifth rebel was captured alive during the offensive that also resulted into the seizure of a motorcycle, a walkie-talkie and some weapons, Javid Faisal added.
The operation was underway in different areas of the province to drive away insurgents and improve security, he said.
