KABUL organisations in Kabul said on Sunday slammed the new university entry test system as unjust and ineffective.
Prepared by ministries of higher education, education and labour and social affairs, the draft strategy is set to be placed before the ministers’ council for approval.
Under the new system, 12-grade graduates would be admitted to universities through Kankor (entry test) on the basis of population and numbers of students in each province. A candidate should have at least 65 percent marks over the past three years.
Dozens of civil society activists gathered in front of the parliament and called the draft a failed mechanism. They alleged candidates were given admissions on the basis of ethnic and linguistic considerations.
A civil society activist, Ajmal Walizada, believed the Ministry of Higher Education should not propose non-academic drafts. “I request the president and his cabinet to reject the draft…”
Students should be selected for universities and scholarships on merit, the protestors said in a resolution letter. If attention was not paid to civil society demands, a civil disobedience movement would erupt, they warned.
According to the draft, students will be enrolled in universities on merit and the process will be transparent. The process is also aimed at even-handed development of the country and transparency, the Ministry of Higher Education said.
