Eidul Fitr observed amid special prayers for peace

KABUL on Thursday with religious fervor and zeal.

Special prayers were offered for lasting peace in mosques and Eidgahs in various cities. The Supreme Court on Wednesday night announced Shawaal moon had been sighted in Saudi Arabia and Eidul Fitr would be marked in Afghanistan on Thursday.

The festival is being celebrated in neighbouring Pakistan, India and some European countries on Friday.

Big congregations took place in Kabul and major cities in provinces without any violence taking place. The faithful hug and greeted each other after Eid prayers.

President Hamid Karzai offered Eid prayers at a mosque in the Presidential Palace along with Cabinet ministers, parliamentarians and jihadi figures.

Prayers leaders highlighted the importance of the day and offered special prayers for a lasting peace in the war-devastated country.

Abdul Jabbar, who offered Eid prayers at the Pul-i-Kheshti mosque, told Pajhwok Afghan News “perhaps every day could pass in peace like this day.”

He called on the disgruntled Afghans to shun violence and join their brothers in their efforts to bring about a lasting peace to the country.

Another faithful, Habib, said Eid was the day when Muslims exchanged gifts and greeted each other on the completion of the holy month of fasting. “May God bring peace to the country, we will regard every day as Eid,” he said.

So far no report about violence has been ascertained across the country, but a day earlier, there were bomb blasts that killed and wounded several people, including children, in Helmand, Maidan Wardak and Ghazni provinces.
