KABUL (Pajhwok): Former Afghan president Hamid Karzai and former chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah, in separate messages on the occasion of Ashura (10th of Muharram), commemorated the day and emphasized the values of unity, justice, sacrifice and Islamic solidarity.
Today marks the 10th of Muharram 1445 Hijri, the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA). Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), along with 72 of his companions, was martyred on the 10th of Muharram in 61 Hijri in the plains of Karbala, Iraq.
In his message, Karzai described Ashura as a reminder of Imam Hussain’s (RA) reformist movement, saying he stood against social deviation, called society toward reform, accountability, and awareness and created the timeless epic of Karbala through his sacrifice.
He added that the people of Afghanistan, like other Muslims, observe Ashura and regard love for the Prophet’s family as a source of unity, brotherhood, and solidarity.
Karzai expressed hope that Afghans would use the spirituality of this day to work together for progress, prosperity, education, and the development of Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Abdullah Abdullah also extended condolences and greetings to the Muslim community on the occasion of Ashura, describing the 10th of Muharram as one of the most significant and meaningful days in Islamic history, embodying values such as faith, piety, patience, sacrifice, and perseverance.
Abdullah said Ashura encourages Muslims to reflect on religious teachings, strengthen unity, uphold justice, and remain committed to human and Islamic principles.
