KABUL in the heavily fortified capital Kabul on Thursday morning.

At least three worshippers belonging to the minority sect sustained injuries in the gun attack that took place in the limits of 6th police district, an official said.

The gun battle in Kala-i-Nazar locality started at 4:15am after the pair opened fire on worshippers.

An eyewitness, Idris Ahmad, told Pajhwok Afghan News he was on his way home when all of a sudden an intense gunfire began, lasting several minutes. “I do not know what happened.”

The National Directorate of Security (NDS), the spy service, said it agents killed the two attackers after they fired at the mosque west of Kabul.

In a statement, the directorate said the two attackers wore police uniforms and were laced with AK-47s, pistols and explosives. They shot injured three people in the mosque before being killed by the agents. Some officials said the attackers were Pakistani militants.

A crime branch police officer, Nasratullah, said the attackers had suicide vests strapped to their bodies. However, he said it remained unclear if the worshippers were their main target.
