MAIMANA (PAN): A sleeping 4-month-old child was burned to death and four other people suffered injuries during two separate gas cylinder explosions in northern Faryab province, officials said on Friday.
One of the explosions that perished the child, while asleep in a crib, took place inside a house in Maimana, the provincial capital.
A neighbour, Wahidullah, said other family members stayed unhurt, but lost some belongings to the fire.
The second incident occurred in Qaiser district on Friday, leaving four workers of a road construction company injured on the Faryab-Herat highway.
The cylinder exploded inside a kitchen belonging the company’s security guards. The injured included the chef, his assistance and two others, according to the district chief, Abdul Jamil Siddique. One cylinder exploded due to hot weather and caused three others to explode, he said.
The injured were rushed to the Afghan-Turk Hospital in Maimana, where a doctor, Babar Shah Intizar, told Pajhwok Afghan News two of them were in critical condition.
The chef’s assistant, Mohammad Arif, said they ran fast towards the kitchen’s door to escape, but the flames engulfed them.
About four months ago, 18 Faryab University students suffered burns due a fire that broke out in their hostel.
