KABUL): Gujar tribal leaders on Wednesday called on President Hamid Karzai and discussed with him problems facing the tribe, the Karzai office said.
The tribesmen urged the government to initiate development programmes in areas of education on a priority basis in eastern and southeastern provinces, where the tribesmen lived, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.
It said the visiting elders called for granting scholarships to talented Gujar students to go to foreign countries for higher studies.
Schools and hospitals should be established in their areas, they demanded. Qari Shamsul-Haq Haqyar and Hajji Mohammad Ayoub spoke on behalf of the delegates.
In response, Karzai promised he would consider their demands and would discuss them with ministers in the next Cabinet meeting.
Appealing the visiting individuals to encourage youth toward education, the president said his government equally treated all tribes.
