HERAT CITY (PAN): Eight insurgents were killed and seven villages of cleared of them during a late night operation in the Shindand district of western Herat province, a military official said on Thursday.
The operation that began the night between Wednesday and Thursday continued until dawn in the Zirako area, the Afghan army’s 207th Zafar Military Corps commando unit spokesman, Col. Nastoh Nasiri, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
A resident of the area, Syeda Jan, alleged the Taliban often used residents as human shield during security operations against them.
He said residents remained in panic throughout the night due to the operation as there was gunfire everywhere.
Shindand district, which shares a long border with Iran, lies 145 kilometres east of Herat City, the provincial capital
Two days ago, the Taliban killed two Afghan troops in the district during a hit-and-run attack.
