Farah prisoners end week-long hunger strike

FARAH CITY (PAN, more than 180 prisoners in the central jail of western Farah province on Thursday called off their week-long hunger strike.

As many as 182 inmates had been on hunger strike since Thursday and 25 of them had their lips sewn up.”  The detainees belonged to the political bloc.

The inmates alleged presidential decrees reducing jail terms had not been applied to them. But explained the presidential orders did not cover political prisoners.

Led by Supreme Court official Syed Murad Sharifi, a delegation arrived in Farah City on Wednesday evening to hold talks with the protestors.

Sharifi told Pajhwok Afghan News the inmates resumed eating this afternoon in the wake of negotiations with the visiting team.

He promised the prisoners’ cases would be investigated minutely and those having served their jail terms would be released.
