PUL-I-ALAM/FAIZABAD (PAN): Nearly a dozen insurgents, including a commander, have been killed and eight others detained in Badakhshan and Logar provinces, officials said on Monday.

Three insurgents, including a commander, were killed and five others captured alive in the Charkh district of central Logar province, the governor’s spokesman, Din Mohammad Darwish, told Pajhwok News.

He said the predawn operation was conducted in Pin Gram area on Sunday night. The dead rebel leader was identified as Mullah Zahid. Heavy and light weapons, walkie-talkies and explosives were also recovered.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said one soldier was killed when fighters stormed a patrol of foreign troops in the Baraki Barak district of the province.

Eight armed rebels were killed, two injured and three others arrested in the Kohna Batash area of Badakhshan, where some weapons and ammunitions were also seized, the police chief said.

Brig. Gen. Imamuddin Motmain said the operation was launched by Afghan National Army (ANA), police and intelligence operatives two days ago and ended today.

One intelligence operative was also killed and two policemen were injured in the offensive, the police official confirmed. Mujahid claimed 10 security personnel including third police district chief Afzal and investigation officer Zabihullah were killed.

Eleven security men, including a local intelligence official, were injured, he added, acknowledging the loss of only two fighters.
