TIRINKOT/SHIBERGHAN (PAN): Security officials seized a number of suicide vests and “poison chemicals” in the capital of central Uruzgan province, while a bomb explosion had been prevented in northern Jawzjan, officials said on Monday.
Uruzgan police spokesman Farid Ayel said 10 suicide vests and some poison substance were seized from a vehicle in Tirinkot, the provincial capital, about 12 noon.
Two persons were detained in connection with the seizure that came from Kandahar province, said Ayel, who believed insurgents wanted to use the suicide vests and the substance in attacks during Eid holidays. The detainees were being questioned, he said.
The incident comes a day after two suspected suicide bombers on a motorcycle died following a blast caused by their own explosives on the outskirts of Tirinkot.
In Jawzjan, an explosives-packed bike was found parked in front of the provincial police chief’s residence in Shiberghan, the provincial capital, on Monday.
Police chief Col. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani said the bomb was defused by a technical team of the crime branch police.
He said the remotely-controlled bomb would have caused many casualties among civilians if it had been detonated because his house was located in a congested area.
