26 females freed from Kabul prison

KABUL (Pajhwok): Twenty-six female inmates were released from the Badam Bagh prison of Kabul on Monday, an official said. Jail terms of several others were reduced.

Attorney General Office (AGO) representative Aziz Ahmad Sarbaz told a news conference in Kabul the inmates had been freed and granted remission in accordance with the 145^th presidential decree.

Jail terms of 102 women and children were curtailed. Currently, 900 women are being held in different prisons across the country, but the number may fall to 400 with the implementation of the presidential decree.

Supreme Court official Syed Murad Sharifi explained the decree benefitted the inmates who had almost served their jail terms.

Jail Administrator Lt. Col. Zar Afshan Naibi said that currently 199 females were being kept in the prison. She asked the beneficiaries to live in peace with their family members.

One of the released women, Safia, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “I had been awarded two years in jail in a rape case. But I spent 11 months and was freed in compliance with the presidential orders.”
