KABUL/MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Thousands of people on Friday pledged support to presidential runners Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayyaf in Balkh and Kabul provinces.
Addressing an election campaign rally in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, Abdullah praised the development of Balkh in recent years and the sacrifices rendered during the jihad.
“Balkh represents a model of development, national unity and merit. It’s an economic hub, where the ground has also been paved for political activities,” he said.
This time around, the Afghans would decide their future through the ballot, hoped Abdullah, who expected the election bodies to check fraud in the democratic exercise.
In the Bagrami district of Kabul, scores of residents promised support to Sayyaf at a public meeting, attended by representatives of 34 villages.
Provincial council candidate Nisar Ahmad Bahlol urged participants to vote for Sayyaf — a noted religious scholar and jihadi commander.
Sayyaf’s son Habibur Rahman said transparent elections were central to bringing peace and stability to the country. If his father succeeded, the mining sector would be exploited, security enforced and jobs created, he concluded.
