214 released from Pul-i-Charkhi prison

KABUL (Pajhwok): More than 210 prisoners were released from the Pul-i-Charkhi jail on the eastern outskirts of Kabul on Sunday, officials said.  

An official of the Attorney General Office (AGO), Capt. Aziz Ahmad Sarbaz, said based on a presidential decree on Mujahedeen’s Victory Day on May 8, a total of 1007 inmates had been freed.

As many as 214 prisoners were released today.  The inmates serving 1-5 years jail terms were released and those sentenced to more than 10 years in jail were given 50 days remissions.  

A fourth batch of prisoners would be released next week, Sarbaz said, adding the process was ongoing throughout the country.  

Lt. Gen. Qais Fasihi, the deputy head of prisons, expressed concern at prisoners’ problems. “One major problem for rule of law in prisons is prison crowding.”  

Khalid, one of the beneficiaries, told Pajhwok Afghan News he and his brother had been charged with kidnapping and each sentenced to eight years in prison.

His brother passed away after two years in prison due to sickness and he was released after three years, he added.
