Taliban’s district chief among 10 killed

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): A Taliban-designated district chief and nine other militants have been killed during separate operations in Kunduz and Sar-i-Pul provinces, officials said on Wednesday.

Nasruddin Nazari, the administrative chief for the Dasht-i-Archi district of Kunduz, identified the Taliban chief for Khwaja Ghar district as Maulvi Sher Aqa, who was killed in an airstrike by the Afghan National Army (ANA).

He said Maulvi Aqa was killed along with two of his associates, who were riding motorbikes. Dashti Archi, sharing a border with the Khwaja Ghar district of Takhar province, has long been haunted by the insurgency.

Elsewhere in the north, police said 26 people including, including rebels and security personnel, were killed during a clearing operation in the Kohistanat district of Sar-i-Pul province.

Acting police chief Col. Sakhidad Haideri told Pajhwok Afghan News a number of militants from neighbouring provinces were meeting in the insecure district to plan terrorist attacks.

He said the security forces launched a joint operation in area to flush out the rebels. “As a result of the offensive, nine armed insurgents were killed and 13 others wounded.”

Four security officials were also wounded, the acting police chief acknowledged, saying the ongoing operation would continue until the district was purged of fighters.
