NEW YORK (Pajhwok): Expressing serious concern over Pakistan.
“We would like to express our serious concern over the rocket attacks by Pakistani forces into Afghanistan’s soil. Continuation of such attacks is unacceptable for Afghanistan,” Osmani said in his address to the annual session of the UN General Assembly.
He hoped the government of Pakistan, considering common interests in ensuring peace, would put an end to acts that could endanger the outlook of good neighbourly relations and trust between the two nations.
Afghanistan, he said, strongly believed in long-term friendly relations with Pakistan in the fight against terrorism and strengthening peace and stability the region.
Afghanistan had achieved a significant milestone with the successful conclusion of the presidential election, including the important task of recounting the votes, he said. The new president will be sworn in on September 29.
“Afghanistan is witnessing the transfer of power from one elected administration to the next. While it faces marked challenges, we are confident that the new government, which enjoys the full backing of a vast majority of Afghans, will strive to bring about political, security and socioeconomic prosperity to Afghanistan and by extension to the region and beyond,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Osmani met UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, during which the latter congratulated him on the conclusion of the presidential elections and the agreement to establish a government of national unity.
“Taking note of the significant transitions underway, including in the area of security, he emphasised the commitment of the United Nations to Afghanistan through the current year and beyond,” a UN statement said.
