KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai appointed Abdur Rasheed Rashed as new chief justice on Thursday, replacing Abdul Salam Azimi.

In a decree from the Presidential Palace, Ahmadzai said: “I approve the appointment of Rashed as chief justice in line with Article 54 of the Constitution…”

The president added his objective behind the appointment of the top judge was to streamline judicial affairs and ensure the easy dispensation of justice.

“I hope the new CJ will succeed in his efforts to enforce justice and further improve the performance of the key sector,” Ahmadzai said.

Earlier in the day, the president accepted Salam’s resignation and awarded him the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Medal — the highest civil honour in the country.

A ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace in the morning to say farewell to Azimi. Ahmadzai praised the outgoing CJ’s contribution to ensuring the rule of law.

Azimi thanked the president for accepting his resignation and conferring the highest civil award on him. “This award is not just an honor for me; it’s also an honour for the Supreme Court as well as the people of Afghanistan.”
