MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A marathon race for peace held in northern Faryab in which hundreds of youth took part conveying a message to insurgents to shun violence and stop attacking sports events, government installations and Afghans.

The marathon was held in Maimana City, the provincial capital, which was participated by 300 youth from schools and universities.

Director Education Department Ahmadullah Arab told Pajhwok Afghan News the competition was aimed at encouraging people to join sports for their well-being and peace.

Ahmad Feroz who stood first in the race urged youth to avoid drugs. “I want the youth to exercise at least half hour a day. Avoid fighting and blood shedding. We are tired. Do not bomb our sport grounds anymore,” he urged insurgents.

Abdul Wahab Majidi, Olympic Committee director, also pleaded rebels to join peace process and avoid killing innocent people.

Two years ago during a Buzkashi competition in Sherin Tagab district two persons were killed and 13 more wounded. An explosion also rocked a cricket ground in Ghazni district killing six children and injuring ten others.

The worst attack so far came last year when a volleyball ground was bombed in Yahya Khail district of Paktika province killing 60 people and wounding 80 others.
