KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday acknowledged universities could not been paid adequate attention due to the security problems in different provinces.
The president was talking to professors and lecturers of higher education institutes from southern Helmand province, who called on him at the Presidential Palaces, a statement from the palace said.
The visiting teachers shared with the president problems concerning higher education in the province, the statement said.
After listening to their problems and suggestions from Helmand University Chancellor Abdul Rahman Soorgul, President Ghani instructed the higher education minister to present to the Cabinet a draft for land acquisition for the university and $1.5 million proposal should also be included in the draft.
“I have ordered connecting universities through the internet and Helmand will also benefit from this and your proposals will be endorsed,” the president said.
Insecure provinces should be given priority in scholarship programmes, but all exams would be conducted through a transparent process, he said.
Universities could not been paid due attention as a result of security reasons, the president said, stressing on the need for more attention to some urgent and short term issues. He promised increased attention to universities this winter.
