Germany to reconstruct gyms at Kabul schools

KABUL of two gymnasiums and funding a teacher capacity-building course for three public schools in Kabul, the country’s ambassador said on Wednesday.

Markus Potzel was speaking after laying the foundation stone of the gymnasium’s reconstruction at the Aisha Durrani high school.

He said the project would include reconstruction and equipping the gymnasium at a cost of around $227,000. The project would be completed over the next 10 days, he added.

According to the ambassador, the amount was part of the $13 million fund by the German Cooperation with Afghanistan agency, GIZ, for reconstruction and capacity building at Aisha Durrani, Amani and Malalai high schools that would be used in the next 14 months.

Mohammad Sayed Mansour, Kabul education director, expressed gratitude to Germans, saying: “The gymnasium would have the capacity to accommodate 300 students and would be used for games like futsal, basketball and other indoor activities.

Swita, a teacher at Aisha Durrani high school, said reconstruction of the gymnasium would facilitate holding inter-school sports competitions for girls and their regular athletic activities.
