KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have agreed to expand bilateral economic ties during their fifth joint economic summit in Ashgabat, the Turkmen capital.

Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi, Energy and Water Minister Ali Ahmad Usmani, Transportation and Civil Aviation Minister Mohammadullah Batash and president’s advisor on economic affairs Dr. Humayon Qayyumi represented the Afghan delegation at the summit.

Both sides signed some Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with regard to improving ties in areas of agriculture, transportation and telecommunications.

Finance Ministry spokesman Ajmal Abdul Rahimzai said one of the MOUs was about purchasing wheat from Turkmenistan.

He said the 6th joint economic summit would be convened soon in which bilateral economic issues would be discussed in detail, including the purchase of wheat.

Earlier, the two countries had inked MOUs on improved bilateral trade, economic relations, money-laundering, energy, sports and information technology.
