FARAH CITY/SAR-I-PUL CITY (Pajhwok): The distribution of improved wheat seed varieties to 3,800 farmers began in western Farah province while work on four uplift schemes was launched in Sar-i-Pul, officials said.

Up to 1,000 growers received the aid in Farah City, PushtRod and Andardara districts. Another 2,800 other farmers in other districts were given improved wheat seeds and chemical fertilisers under the Regional Agricultural Development Program – West (RADPW).

Director of Agriculture, Irrigation and LivestockEng. Abdul Manan Mateen told Pajhwok Afghan News each farmer received 25 kilograms of wheat seed and as much chemical fertiliser. More than 12,000 farmers will be supported over the next four years.

Two wheat seed varieties — Dorakhshan and Herat-99 which are suitable for the climatic conditions of Farah, had been distributed to the growers, the agriculture director said.

A resident of Ganahkan village on the outskirts of Farah City, Niaz Mohammad, was happy over receiving the wheat seed but complained about its quality.

Separately, construction work on four development schemes worth 15 million afghanis was launched in three villages on the outskirts of Sar-i-Pul City.

Funded by UNICEF, the projects include two water dams, a 500-metre retaining wall and 200-metre schools boundary wall.

The projects would benefit 1800 families directly and 4600 households indirectly, said Director of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Eng. Ahmad Javed.
