UN to attract long-term aid for Afghanistan: Envoy

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Tadamichi Yamamoto, deputy special representative of the United Nations in Afghanistan’s body would persuade donor countries to provide long-term assistance to the war-torn country.

Yamamoto was speaking at a gathering at the governor’s house in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province.

The diplomat praised the High Peace Council (HIA)’s reconciliation with the Afghan government opened doors for other insurgent groups to follow suit.

He also said the UN supported the implementation of electoral reform in  Afghanistan for the sake of free and fair future elections.

Yamamoto, who is going to replace UN secretary general’s special representative for Afghanistan Nicholas Haysom next month, said he would attract foreign assistance for Afghanistan in summits of G7 countries and others.

Nangarhar Governor Salim Khan Kunduzi told the gathering that the Afghan national forces had been able to maintain security and clear many areas of insurgents in the province.

The governor insisted on transparent elections and said lessons should be learned from past mistakes.

Laghman Governor Abdul Jabbar Naeemi and Kunar Governor Wahidullah Kalimzai also spoke on the occasion and provided information about their provinces.
