MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A 20-year-old woman has been killed under mysterious circumstances over apparently having telephonic contact with a man in the Pashunkot district of northwestern Faryab province, an official said on Wednesday.
The security official, who wished to go unnamed, told Pajhwok Afghan News the woman, a resident of Chakmak locality, had ‘an affair’ with a man in Katla Qala area.
She left home and was on her way to meet the man but she was captured by a number of gunmen, the official said. The woman was handed over to local elders for a decision on her fate. The elders handed her over to her father without any decision.
While arriving home, the woman was intercepted again by a local uprising commander Abdul Rahman Shamal who ordered his supporters to kill her, the official said.
But Shamal rejected his involvement in the murder, saying the woman was married and had been in illicit relationship with two other men. The commander said the woman had been killed by her uncle who then fled to Iran.
However, Col. Hayat Surkhabi, the Pashunkot police chief, said the 20-year-old woman was killed by her cousin. He said individuals involved in the incident had fled to northern Balkh province and police were investigating the issue.
Syed Hafizullah Fitrat, Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) head for Fayab province, demanded immediate arrest of those involved.
