Half of Afghanistan schools without buildings: Minister

BAMYAN (Pajhwok): The education lacked buildings and more than 16,000 teachers were only high school graduates.

Asadullah Hanif Balkhi, during a visit to Bamyan province, said budget for construction of 636 schools had been obtained from the government in the past years, but buildings for the schools were either not constructed or left incomplete.

He said half of Afghanistan schools lacked buildings and 50 percent of teachers had only 14 years of education. He added more than 16,000 of teachers were high school graduate.

About a lack of teachers in Bamyan, Balkhi said his ministry alone could resolve all problems concerning education and people should also cooperate with in this regard.

“Residents of Maidan Wardak province employ a professional teacher for their children against any salary he demands, the residents of Bamyan and Daikundi are doing the same that is why the level of literacy is high in these provinces,” he said.

Balkhi said the appointment of professional teachers by local residents was a type of their cooperation with the Ministry of Education.

He said the ministry’s former leaders had neglected overcoming the shorage of teachers in schools and that was why currently 40,000 more teachers were needed for schools across the country.

He said the Ministry of Education was assessing the situation of schools, teachers and students throughout the country through its teams to know exact statistics and appoint teachers based on them.
