HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Six people have been killed and 18 others wounded as a result of a gas cylinder explosion in western Herat province, officials said on Saturday.

Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, local hospital’s spokesman told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident happened in the limits of the ninth police district in Haji Abbas area on Friday night.

He said six people were killed and 18 others wounded. The injured are said to be in critical condition.

Police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada said six people were killed and 17 wounded -- six of them critically who would be sent abroad for better treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the explosion was so powerful that it shattered windowpanes in nearby houses and shops in the area.

Faroz, one shopkeeper in the neighbourhood, said: “I saw with my own eyes some bakers trying to get out of their bakery but flames didn’t let them run away.”
