Fumigation campaign goes into action in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A campaign to prevent pomegranates and other fruits from contracting diseases has been launched in two districts – Arghandab and Arghistan — of southern Kandahar province.

The provincial Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department has launched the campaign in collaboration with a trade company, according to Hafeezullah Syedi, the agriculture director.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the drive, targeting 8000 fruit orchards, particularly of pomegranates, was aimed at fighting the spread of mosquito-borne and other diseases.

He said Haji Syed Ahmad Khoshkyar Trade Company had provided 7.2 million afghanis in financial aid to the fumigation campaign aimed at controlling injurious insects from attacking the plants.

The agriculture director hoped the harvests this season would increase manifold after the fumigation campaign.

A representative of the Haji Syed Ahmad Khoshkyar company, Wahed Niazi, said the company had been operational in Afghanistan 30 years ago, arranging training programs for farmers.

He promised continued assistance with farmers on behalf of his company.

Local orchard owners expressed happiness over the campaign, saying various diseases each year attacked orchards, affecting the yield.

Thousands of tones of fruits are exported to Pakistan, India and other countries from Kandahar province each year.
